Despite trying to move on with her life, Mindy found that she kept having similar dreams, always about the same woman – who looked exactly like her. She almost knew this dream house inside out – it was a mansion, but Mindy felt she’d know her way through its elegant halls. She found herself hearing the gramophone play its tune even when she was awake, she heard it so often in her sleep, and saw the woman in the red dress dance gleefully.
Sometimes, Mindy even saw this woman make love to her husband – if you could even call it that. For as much as this elegant woman was a Duchess in the streets, Mindy knew she was a dirty ass whore in the sheets – and on the coffee table.
As the dreams grew more frequent, Mindy became increasingly curious. She’d realised that her dreams were not in first person, as they normally should be, but she was a bystander watching this woman live. Sometimes she even felt her emotions. Mindy felt that she knew this woman somehow.
Mindy was determined to explore this dream realm further.
Otis was usually reluctant to let Mindy use their computer, so she waited until he was asleep, and her daughter was napping, and jumped online to research dreaming.
She discovered lucid dreaming, and techniques for exploring dream worlds. She read some theories on how to remain conscious whilst dreaming.
This suspicious behaviour ought to have caused some concern for those responsible for monitoring Plebeian Mindy – but it is human to be short-sighted.
